Arizona's Research Based Approach to Language Development

Arizona's language development approach is backed by research and is meant to be a more comprehensive approach to teaching English language learners (Arizona's Language Development Approach, n.d.). By building content knowledge and language development in tandem with one another and utilizing differentiation strategies based on students' strengths, English language learners are taught in a way that develops the whole child. The approved approaches utilized in Arizona are newcomer, pull-out, two-hour, and 50-50 dual language immersion. These approaches, based on four principles, are intended to result in students who not only develop English language skills, but also develop a sense of agency, confidence, and determination (Arizona's Language Development Approach, n.d.).
