Arizona’s Approved Research-Based SEI Models
Arizona has four research-based Sheltered English Immersion models that are approved to be utilized in their school system. These four models are Newcomer, Pull-Out, Two-Hour, and 50-50 Dual Language Immersion (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.).
The Newcomer model provides students with two forms of English instruction. First, newcomer students receive 120 minutes per day of targeted English language development instruction. This instruction is provided by certified ESL teachers and is based upon the individual needs of the student (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.). The other form of English instruction is 120 minutes per day within the student's typical integrated setting. These minutes should be stretched out across the school day in order to provide English instruction based on each student's proficiency level in concurrence with the content instruction (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.)fewer.
The Pull-Out model is very similar to the Newcomer model, but with less time requirements. The Pull-Out model required 60 minutes per day of targeted instruction where they are pulled from the classroom with ESL teachers and another 60 minutes of language instruction in their integrated classroom setting throughout the content areas (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.).
The Two-Hour model provides English learners with 120 minutes per day of targeted English instruction, that does not interfere with the student's core content areas (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.).
Finally, the 50-50 Dual Language Immersion model requires that 50% of all content instruction is done using English, and 50% in their first language (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.). This model also states that all English learners receive 30 minutes per day of targeted English instruction and 90 minutes per day of language instruction within their integrated classroom setting (SEI program Model Implementation Guide, n.d.).
